Prime Day is full of fake markdowns. These 5 items reliably drop, and here's how low
Amazon's big sale events bring real discounts on a short list of products. These five are the ones we would watch, with a price worth waiting for.

Prime Day and Amazon's fall Prime event promise thousands of deals, and that is the problem. Sifting through them takes hours, and plenty of the discounts are on products you would never want or prices that were never really higher.
We compared about 40 products that have appeared in past Prime events, looking at owner feedback, independent reviews and how far prices typically fall. Amazon's own devices dominate because Amazon discounts them hardest, but we also kept two non-Amazon products with a long history of steep event pricing. Each pick includes a typical price and a deal price, which is a good price to wait for during the event. For deals outside Prime events, see our best deals today.

Best smart speaker deal

The Echo Dot is the easiest way to add Alexa to a room. The 5th Gen model sounds fuller than earlier versions, according to reviewers, and it includes a built-in temperature sensor that can trigger smart home routines. Owners use it for timers, music, weather and controlling smart plugs and lights. The trade-off is that it ties you to Amazon's ecosystem and sound is still best suited to small rooms. Because Amazon cuts its own devices so deeply during Prime events, paying full price for a Dot rarely makes sense. For a speaker with a screen, look at our best smart displays.
Pros
- Deep event discounts
- Fuller sound than older Dots
- Temperature sensor for routines
Cons
- Best for small rooms
- Locks you into Alexa

Best streaming deal

The Fire TV Stick 4K plugs into an HDMI port and gives you every major streaming app, plus an Alexa Voice Remote that can also control your TV's power and volume. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Wi-Fi 6, which matters if you have a newer TV and router. Owners like how quick it is to set up. The downside is Amazon's interface, which leans heavily on ads and its own content. Compare it with Roku and Google options in our best streaming devices guide. During Prime events, this is one of the most reliable deals you will find.
Pros
- Supports Dolby Vision and HDR10+
- Alexa Voice Remote with TV controls
- Wi-Fi 6 support
Cons
- Ad-heavy home screen
- Favors Amazon content

Best e-reader deal

The Paperwhite hits the sweet spot in Amazon's Kindle lineup. The current model has a 7-inch glare-free display, an adjustable warm light for reading at night, waterproofing for the bath or the beach, and USB-C charging. Amazon rates battery life in weeks, and owners consistently say it outlasts their expectations. The trade-offs: the base version shows lock-screen ads unless you pay to remove them, and it reads Amazon's formats best. It also makes an easy gift, which is why it appears in our gifts for women guide. Wait for the deal price if you can.
Pros
- Glare-free 7-inch screen
- Waterproof
- Battery lasts weeks
Cons
- Lock-screen ads unless you pay extra
- Works best with Amazon's store

Best kitchen deal

The BL610 has stayed popular for years because it delivers strong blending for the money. The 1,000-watt motor and stacked blade assembly crush ice and frozen fruit quickly, and the 72-ounce pitcher handles big batches. Owners like how simple it is. There are just a few buttons. The trade-offs: it is loud, and the stacked blade is sharp and needs careful handling when cleaning. It is less suited to small single-serve smoothies than a personal blender. If you are setting up a healthier kitchen, our best meal prep containers pair well with it. Below the deal price, it is hard to beat.
Pros
- Crushes ice easily
- Large pitcher
- Simple controls
Cons
- Loud
- Sharp stacked blade to clean around

Best wellness deal

The Theragun Mini packs Therabody's percussive massage into a palm-sized device that fits in a gym bag. Owners use it on calves, shoulders and quads after workouts or long days at a desk, and reviewers praise its build quality compared with cheaper look-alikes. It has three speed settings and a simple one-button design. The trade-off is reach. It is harder to use on your own back than a full-size gun, and it costs more than many generic options. Compare it with other models in our best massage guns guide. At the deal price, it is a strong gift too.
Pros
- Very portable
- Well built
- Simple controls
Cons
- Harder to reach your back
- Pricier than generic guns

How we chose
We reviewed products that appeared in past Prime events and kept only those with a long sales history, consistent owner feedback and favorable independent reviews. Then we looked at price history to find items that fall meaningfully during the event, not just a few dollars. Amazon devices made the cut because Amazon reliably discounts them the most. We skipped products that only exist as event-specific bundles and brands with patchy support. This guide is research-based, drawn from specs, owner feedback, independent reviews and price tracking.
What the deal price means
Each pick lists a deal price, which is a good price to wait for during a Prime event. It reflects where the product tends to land, based on price history. It is not a promise of what Amazon will charge this time. If a pick hits that number, buy with confidence. If not, the next big sale is rarely far off.
How to tell a real deal
A markdown only matters if it beats what the item normally sells for. Retailers often show a crossed-out list price that almost nobody pays, which makes an ordinary price look like a bargain. Before you buy, compare the sale price with the item's recent price history on a tracker or across two or three big retailers.
Watch for a few warning signs:
- Inflated list prices. A huge percentage off a price the product never actually sold at.
- Old or renamed models. Last year's version sold at this year's price, or a retailer-specific model number that is hard to compare.
- Third-party sellers. On marketplaces, check that the item ships from and is sold by the retailer or the brand itself.
- Bundles you do not need. Extra accessories can hide a weak discount on the main item.
During Prime events, also compare with Walmart, Target and Best Buy. Competing sales often match or beat Amazon on popular items.
What to look for when shopping Prime Day
Make a short list before the event starts and set a target price for each item. Check whether a deal is Prime-exclusive, since you need an active membership to get it. For smart home devices, think about which ecosystem you already use, since mixing Alexa, Google and Apple devices can get messy. For Apple gear specifically, our Apple accessory deals guide tracks what tends to drop. And if you are buying gifts early, Prime events are a good time to cross names off your holiday gift list.
