A steam mop uses heat and water to loosen dirt and sanitize sealed hard floors, so you can skip harsh cleaning sprays. They're especially good on tile, grout and vinyl, and for families with kids and pets who spend time on the floor.

We compared popular steam mops on heat-up time, steam settings, tank size, pad design, weight, cord length and price, and read owner feedback on durability and leaks. These are the best.

Which floors can you steam mop?

Steam mops work best on sealed hard floors: ceramic and porcelain tile, sealed stone, vinyl and sealed laminate in some cases. Avoid unsealed wood, waxed floors and some laminates, because heat and moisture can cause warping. Check your flooring manufacturer's guidance before steaming wood or laminate.

For carpets and rugs, a portable carpet cleaner handles spills, and a robot vacuum keeps daily dust under control.

What to look for in a steam mop

  • Heat-up time. 30 seconds or less is ideal.
  • Steam settings. Lower steam for wood and laminate, higher for tile.
  • Pads. Washable microfiber saves money; double-sided pads cover more floor.
  • Tank size and cord length. Bigger homes need both.

How we chose: we compared specs, materials, features and price, and read owner and expert feedback. We didn't test these products ourselves. Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the vacuum. Steam mopping over grit just pushes it around and can scratch floors.
  • Leaving the mop in one spot. Concentrated heat and moisture can damage finishes. Keep it moving.
  • Using tap water in hard-water areas. Minerals clog steam vents. Use distilled water if your manual recommends it.
  • Reusing dirty pads. A dirty pad spreads grime. Swap pads as soon as they look soiled.
  • Steaming unsealed floors. Unsealed wood, cork and some laminates can warp or swell.

For grout, go slowly with the highest steam setting and a fresh pad, or use a handheld steamer attachment if your model has one. Open a window or run a fan afterward so floors dry quickly.

Steam mops work especially well alongside a robot vacuum: the vacuum handles daily dust and crumbs, and you steam mop once or twice a week for a deeper clean.

Store the mop with the pad removed and the tank empty so it doesn't develop odors or mildew between uses.

Which one should you buy?

For most homes, the Bissell PowerFresh is the best value. If you have a lot of floor to cover, the Shark Steam Pocket Mop and its flip pads save time. The O-Cedar is the light, simple pick for small apartments. Whichever you choose, vacuum or sweep first so the steam isn't just pushing grit around.

Wash pads after each use and empty the tank so it doesn't build up minerals.

Frequently asked questions

Do steam mops really sanitize?

High-temperature steam can kill many germs on sealed surfaces, but results depend on contact time and temperature.

Can I use cleaning solution in a steam mop?

Usually not. Most are designed for water only; check the manual.

Are steam mops safe on hardwood?

Only on sealed hardwood at low steam, and only if the floor manufacturer allows it.
